Certified DOT Exams to Keep You on the Road

If you drive a commercial vehicle, you must undergo a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination to maintain your commercial driver's license (CDL). At Broadway Family Clinic in Pearland, Texas, our certified medical examiners provide thorough, efficient DOT physicals to ensure you meet federal safety standards and can continue your driving career. Dr. Kashif Siddiqui and Dr. Sumera Muzaffar are experienced in performing DOT exams and understand the unique health requirements for commercial drivers.

What is a DOT Physical?

A DOT physical is a comprehensive health examination required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for commercial motor vehicle drivers. The exam ensures that drivers are physically, mentally, and emotionally capable of safely operating large commercial vehicles. All interstate commercial drivers must pass a DOT physical and maintain a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate to legally drive.

Who Needs a DOT Physical?

You need a DOT physical if you operate a commercial motor vehicle that meets any of these criteria:

  • Weighs 10,001 pounds or more

  • Is designed or used to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver)

  • Is designed or used to transport 9 to 15 passengers for direct compensation

  • Transports hazardous materials in quantities requiring placards

This includes truck drivers, bus drivers, delivery drivers, tow truck operators, tank truck drivers, flatbed drivers, and any other commercial vehicle operators meeting the weight or passenger requirements.

What to Expect During Your DOT Physical

Your DOT examination at Broadway Family Clinic includes a comprehensive evaluation of your health and ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle:

Medical History Review

We'll review your complete medical history, including current medications, past surgeries and hospitalizations, chronic medical conditions, previous injuries or accidents, sleep disorders or symptoms, and substance use history. Be honest and thorough—withholding information can result in serious consequences.

Vision Testing

Our in-house vision testing evaluates visual acuity (at least 20/40 in each eye, with or without correction), peripheral vision (at least 70 degrees in each eye), and color recognition (ability to distinguish traffic signal colors). We can perform these tests on-site, making your exam more convenient.

Hearing Test

We assess your hearing ability to ensure you can perceive a forced whisper at not less than 5 feet, or meet alternative standards if using a hearing aid.

Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate

Your blood pressure must meet specific guidelines to pass the DOT physical. We measure your blood pressure and pulse rate and provide guidance if your readings are elevated.

Urinalysis

A urine sample screens for underlying medical conditions such as diabetes and kidney disease. This is not a drug test, though employers may require separate drug screening.

Physical Examination

A thorough physical exam includes evaluation of your heart, lungs, abdomen, vascular system, musculoskeletal system, neurological function, spine, and extremities, as well as your overall physical condition.

Additional Testing When Needed

Depending on your medical history and examination findings, we may perform or recommend additional testing such as an EKG for heart conditions, blood glucose testing for diabetes screening, or a sleep apnea evaluation if symptoms are present. Our in-house laboratory, EKG, and diagnostic services make additional testing convenient and efficient.

To pass your DOT physical, you must meet specific federal standards:

Diabetes

  • Insulin use requires exemption approval in many cases

Certain medical conditions require careful evaluation and may need additional documentation, specialist clearance, or FMCSA exemptions. These include heart disease, respiratory conditions, epilepsy or seizure disorders, mental health conditions, vision or hearing problems, and musculoskeletal issues affecting driving ability.

How Long is a DOT Medical Certificate Valid?

Most drivers receive a 2-year medical certificate if they meet all requirements and have no restrictions. However, your certificate may be valid for a shorter period (1 year or 3 months) if you have medical conditions requiring monitoring or treatment, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, or other health issues requiring follow-up.

  • Glasses or contact lenses, if you use them

  • Hearing aids, if you use them

  • Medical records related to any chronic conditions

  • Specialist clearance letters if you have certain conditions
